Characteristics

1. Porifera live in salt water and can be found attached to the rocks on the ocean floor.

2. The body of the porifera is simple. There are no specialized organs or tissues for feeding, etc.

3. The body has two layers:
------> Outer layer - to protect------> Inner layer - where flagella move water

4. The body is hollow and vase-shaped with openings called pores and osculum.
------> Pores - let water in ------> Osculum - let water out

5. Some sponges (porifera) take calcium from water to create sharp, pointy spicules for support. Others sponges are soft and have spongin for support.
